Veteran teaching and research scholar Riduan Abid has joined the faculty of the TSYS School of Computer Science.  Abid comes to CSU from Alakhawayn University in Morocco, after having also been previously affiliated with Purdue University and the University of Houston.  Abid, who earned a doctorate in computer science from Auburn University, primarily focuses his research on cloud computing, smart grids/cities, and wireless mesh sensor networks.  His prior research has appeared in the Journal of Signal Processing Systems , Journal of Wireless Sensor Networks , International Journal of Mobile Communications , International Journal of Next Generation Networks , Applied Sciences Journal , International Journal of Computer Theory and Engineering , and, most recently, Information .  Since 2013, Abid has served as principal investigator of various research grants totaling more than $1 million.

As pointed out by TSYS School associate professor of computer science Anastasia Angelopoulou and her colleagues Konstantinos Mykoniatis of Auburn University and Tianqi Gao Smith of the Mayo Clinic in their 2021 study appearing in the International Journal of Simulation and Process Modelling , pedestrian behavior in urban spaces has abruptly changed amidst the COVID-19 pandemic due to government-issued restrictions such as social distancing.  Although it is unclear whether pedestrian behavior will remain altered and/or urban spaces will be changed accordingly post-pandemic, these researchers take these changes and uncertainties, and the unique characteristics of pedestrian traffic (as opposed to vehicle traffic), into consideration in creating a hybrid simulation model that is capable of examining the efficiency of several types of escalator pedestrian behaviors in various non-crowded scenarios.  According to Angelopoulou, “our generic simulation model allows future...

  Building a Better Bargaining Framework As Turner College assistant professor of management Hyeran Choi points out in her joint-authored research with Daisung Jang of the University of Queensland (Australia) and Jeffrey Lowenstein of the University of Illinois, effective negotiation rests in part on generating integrative agreements, or agreements advancing parties’ interests through generating joint gains.  Their study of negotiations, which appears in a 2021 issue of Group Decision and Negotiation , also indicates that prior negotiation research relies disproportionately on studies of one method of integration – making efficient tradeoffs on existing issues.  Choi and her colleagues address this single-minded focus on negotiations by examining integration through redefinition, which is a process that entails modifying the issues under discussion.  According to Choi, “[redefinition] encourages revisiting the role goals play in negotiation,” a result that can be be...

The CSU Foundation Board of Trustees recently welcomed eight new trustees, along with a new executive director for the CSU Foundation Properties.  The board is comprised of community leaders who advocate for and support the mission of CSU.  Among the new members is Jason C. “Jay” Alexander, the current CEO and president of Alexander Electric Company, based in Columbus.  He graduated from CSU’s  Turner College of Business  in 2001 and has since earnestly supported CSU.  Alexander is a  Shannon Society  member in recognition of creating endowments that enhance and support excellence at CSU.  Alexander established the Jay and Kellie Alexander Scholarship Endowment to support undergraduate students in the Turner College of Business.  Joining Alexander is W. Mary Gowan, Chair of the Board of Governors for Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS), the international honor society for AACSB accredited business programs, recently congratulated the Turner College’s Beta Gamma Sigma chapter for earning  High Honors  status for the 2020-2021 academic year, which is   the second-highest distinction possible  for BGS chapters.   By earning High Honors status, the Turner College’s BGS chapter becomes eligible to nominate candidates for some of the honor society’s prestigious global awards, including Outstanding Chapter of the Year and the Business Achievement and Entrepreneurial Achievement Awards, which recognize community business leaders, alumni, or donors.   Gowan, Dean of the Mike Cottrell College of Business at the University of North Georgia, congratulated the Turner College for achieving this outstanding distinction.   “We appreciate your team’s diligent work and your continuing support of Beta Gamma Sigma.   We look for...

  The Turner College’s TSYS School of Computer Science hosted the  ISACA - Atlanta  Chapter’s “Cybersecurity in Action” training workshop in October.  The workshop was held at CSU’s TSYS Cybersecurity Center as part of the university’s  National Cybersecurity Month  lineup of events.  Workshop attendees benefited from four facilitated sessions that included demonstrations of the TSYS School’s new Cyber Range and Security Operations Center (SOC).  Presenters included Fort Benning Garrison Commander Col. Alexis Rivera, W.C. Columbus and the Valley magazine recently honored Columbus residents in their “5 under 40” and “Rising Stars” lists .  Among the lists were several CSU alumni and faculty.  Of the “5 under 40” honorees, two have ties to the Turner College of Business.  Jessica Ferriter earned a master’s degree in organizational leadership (MSOL) from the Turner College in 2016 and has served on the CSU Alumni Association Board of Directors.  Currently, she is the human resources director at Southeastern Cardiology Associates, PC. She holds both the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Associate Certified Coach (ACC) designations, and throughout her career, she has worked in corporate, government and military sectors.  The other honoree, Cortney Laughlin Wilson, is a 2012 graduate of the Turner College’s MSOL program.  In addition to serving as director of CSU’s William B.
