Double Standards Do Exist According to New Study Co-Authored by Economics Professor

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Female faculty members hoping to advance to the highest ranks of academia face significant barriers due to male-dominated environments at colleges and universities, according to a new study co-authored by Frank Mixon , professor of economics in Columbus State University’s Turner College of Business. “One of the striking findings is that female management professors exhibit, on average, the same degree of job mobility — captured by the number of prior academic appointments held — as their male counterparts, yet face a lower probability of holding a named (endowed) professorship,” said Mixon. The study, published in the Journal of Management , suggests that a masculine-gendered environment dominates colleges of business, leading to shifting standards when it comes to the highest senior appointments in academe. 2017 Business Plan Competition a Huge Success

The Turner College’s 2017 Business Plan Competition                                                                   was, according to Jack Goldfrank , the most impressive of any over the six-year history of the competition.  According to Goldfrank, the Turner College’s Executive-in-Residence and a member of the advisory panel for the competition, there were 51 business plan submissions from CSU students, secondary school students from the Muscogee County area, and residents of the greater Columbus community.  The competition’s faculty advisor, Kirk Heriot , the Turner College’s Crowley Endowed Chair of Entrepreneurship, was pleased to announce that CSU student Michaela Waldeck won first place, and a check for $3,000, for a concept known as Tata Toga.  Waldeck’s product concept is a towel featuring a privacy attachment that is designed for nursing mothers. Turner College Faculty and Staff Recognized at Annual Retreat

  A number of Turner College faculty and staff were recognized by the administrative team at the 2017 annual retreat.   Laurence Marsh , associate professor of management, received the Turner College Graduate Faculty Award.   In recognizing Marsh, Dean Linda Hadley remarked on his many contributions to the college’s M.S. degree program in organizational leadership.   Marsh teaches both Negotiations and Strategic Leadership in that curriculum.   Associate professor of computer science, Radhouane Chouchane , received the Turner College Teaching Award.   As noted elsewhere in this issue of Turner Business , Chouchane was also a finalist for the 2016 CSU Educator of the Year Award. Turner College Faculty Win Big at 2017 Recognition and Excellence Awards Ceremony

Turner College business and computer science faculty were big winners at the 2017 Faculty & Staff Recognition and Excellence Awards ceremony, held in CSU’s Lumpkin Center on May 2, 2017.   Especially impressive was the success of faculty of the TSYS School of Computer Science, which included Rania Hodhod , who received the 2017 CSU Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award.   Hodhod, an assistant professor of computer science, has published more than 40 reference articles in the areas of intelligent systems, machine learning, educational games and computational creativity.   She recently led her undergraduate students to present their research at the Big South Undergraduate Research Symposium in North Carolina, where they won Best Science Paper Award.   Joining Hodhod was Radhouane Chouchane , an associate professor of computer science, who received the 2017 CSU Excellence in Online Teaching Award.   Chouchane has taught courses in computer security, supervised master’s theses, an
