CSU Men’s Tennis Wins 2018 National Championship

Turner College of Business students did their part in helping the Columbus State University men’s tennis team capture the 2018 NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Championship.  That team, which defeated Barry University in the title match held in Surprise, Arizona, has four members who are pursuing studies in the Turner College.  These are Arnold Kokulewski , a marketing major from Zielona Gorá, Poland, K.P. Pannu , a general business major from Wellington, New Zealand, Alvaro Regalado , a general business major from Alicante, Spain, and Jorge Vargas , an accounting major from Naples, Florida.  Vargas and Kokulewski teamed to provide CSU with a doubles win, and one point, while Regalado partnered with Zach Whaanga to capture another point in doubles.  Pannu, Regalado and Kokulewski each won their singles match to round out CSU’s 5-4 win over Barry in the title contest.   Congratulations to these talented student-athletes.

Presley Wins 2018 Turner College Business Plan Competition

The Turner College of Business’ 2018 Business Plan Competition was, according to Crowley Professor of Management Kirk Heriot , a resounding success, drawing submissions from 31 individuals and teams, all vying for the $6,000 in total cash prizes.  Capturing third place in the 2018 Competition was Nathan Carr for his concept known as Sonic Air Flow.  Carr’s concept, which earned him a cash prize of $1,000, uses turbine-powered fans that can be used to regulate the heat in buildings that have large open spaces.  Taking second place, and $2,000, was Victor Feliciano, whose concept is known as Vicinity Tours.  Feliciano’s business provides tours of Columbus to out-of-town visitors, and is, according to Heriot, “already earning revenue.”  Finally, the top prize in the competition, and a cash gift of $3,000, went to Kimberly Presley for a concept known as Alternative Clay Targets.  Presley’s company will produce biodegradable, and even edible, targets for skeet shooting, replacing the tradi

Peker Wins CSU Faculty Service Award

TSYS School of Computer Science associate professor Yesem Peker was the Turner College’s big winner at the 2018 Faculty & Staff Recognition and Excellence Awards Banquet held in CSU’s Lumpkin Center on May 7, 2018.   Peker serves on a number of important committees – nine in total, including the Turner College’s Assurance of Learning Committee.   Also nominated for awards at the 2018 event were Alfredo Perez , also an associate professor in TSYS School, who was a finalist for the Faculty Research and Scholarship Award, and Tesa Leonce , an associate professor of economics who was nominated for the Teaching Excellence Award.   Also nominated from the Turner College were Kevin Hurt , an associate professor of management and finalist for the Chappell Graduate Award, and Johnny Ho , a professor of management and nominee for the inaugural Teaching Innovation Award.   Lastly, TSYS School professor Shamim Kahn was among the nominees for the International Educator of the Year Award.
