CSU Registrar Announces Major Change to Commencement Season

CSU Registrar Stephanie Speer recently announced a major change coming to CSU's commencement season. Beginning this semester, CSU graduate students will have their own commencement ceremony occurring on the same day as ceremonies for undergraduate students. On Friday, December 14, 2026, students receiving graduate certificates and degrees from any Columbus State University college, including master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees, will enjoy their own commencement ceremony beginning at 4:00pm. Graduate students will attend only this ceremony and not both this ceremony and their college’s ceremony (unless also receiving an undergraduate degree or certificate). Faculty advisors will hood doctoral degree graduates during the ceremony, while college deans will hood master’s and specialist degree graduates. This ceremony replaces the Graduate Hooding Ceremony usually held on the Thursday evening before our Friday Commencement ceremonies. "The compelling benefit of restructuring our commencement events this way is that it streamlines the graduation experience for graduate students and their families, whose celebrations spanned two days of events and required an overnight hotel stay. [It also benefits] event staff, whose duties require multi-day, multi-event support[, and] faculty, whose duties require multi-day, multi-ceremony attendance," Speer explained. Speer added that this plan also maintains a ceremony exclusive to graduate students while better integrating it into the “graduation day experience.” It also maintains an even distribution of graduates across ceremonies so they remain ticketless, and graduates are not limited in the number of guests they can invite. Undergraduate commencement exercises will take place prior to the graduate student ceremony. Graduating seniors in the College of the Arts and the College of Letters and Science will participate in a 9:00am commencement, while those in the College of Education and Health Professions and the Turner College of Business and Technology will participate in a 12:30pm commencement.

The Turner College community was informed this morning that Deborah Kidder 's tenure as Dean of the organization is set to end on December 12, 2025.
