TURNER COLLEGE SPOTLIGHT

TSYS Center for Cybersecurity Cyber Range

Turner Business recently visited with the TSYS Center for Cybersecurity’s Ehab Bedir to discuss the Center’s cyber range.  The highlights of that visit are presented below.

TB: What is a cyber range, and how did the TSYS Center for Cybersecurity acquire one?

EB: Cyberbit’s cyber range provides hyper-realistic simulated attack experiences to TSYS School students and IT professionals.  Through delivering experiential hands-on training, the range acts as a ‘live-fire’ range.  That is, it allows students to experience and practice in hyper-realistic environments, which include enterprise-grade networks and commercial security tools.  It also allows students to get immersed in simulations of real-world cyber-attacks that they can encounter on the job, such as ransomware, supply chain, web defacement attacks, and many others.  The cost of the Cyberbit’s cyber range was $1.3 million, built with the help of a $5 million gift from TSYS.

TB: What is your official position, and what are your duties with the cyber range?

EB: I am the Cyber Range Network and Computer Systems Administrator in the TSYS Center for Cybersecurity.  I am responsible for implementing and managing all network and infrastructure operations and security in the TSYS Center for Cybersecurity.  In addition, I am working with a controlled, hyper-realistic, and interactive technology environment to run and customize scenarios on the cyber range that simulate the worst possible and most advanced attacks on IT infrastructure, networks, software platforms, and applications.  Lastly, I train students and professionals to learn/improve their skills in order to detect and mitigate cyber-attacks using the same kind of equipment they will work on in their daily real-world job.

TB: Where are other cyber ranges in Georgia and Alabama? How do those compare to ours?

EB: There is no similar advanced cyber range like Cyberbit’s cyber range in either Georgia or Alabama.  The nearest similar range environments are located at Miami Dade College, Purdue University, Marshall University, the University of Maine and the University of Texas – San Antonio.

TB: Who is using our cyber range?

EB: Computer science seniors and Nexus degree students are using the cyber range, in addition to industry professionals.

Prior to joining the TSYS Center for Cybersecurity, Bedir earned an MBA from the University of Derby in 2011, a certificate in business intelligence from the University of Colorado System in 2016, and a master’s degree in cybersecurity management from the TSYS School at CSU in 2020.
