CSU Honors Synovus with a Renaming Ceremony

Columbus State University's Center for Commerce and Technology became the Synovus Center of Commerce and Technology in November of 2018.  “This naming is recognition of the long role that Synovus has had in supporting and shaping both the community of Columbus and the campus and curriculum of Columbus State University,” said CSU President Chris Markwood. “It is especially appropriate that the highly-respected Synovus name be tied to the home of our innovative business and computer science programs, which Synovus has so generously supported.”

Synovus has contributed or pledged more than $6 million to Columbus State University over the last two decades. The company's leaders have led recent capital campaigns, and their support has gone directly to help women's athletics, student scholarships, the music program, the TSYS Department of Computer Science and the university's financial success program. Synovus has also been a strong supporter of CSU internships, hired CSU graduates, and participated in community development efforts.

“The decades-long partnership between Synovus and Columbus State has been mutually beneficial to our company and the university and, even more important, tremendously fruitful for the Chattahoochee Valley,” said Kessel Stelling, Synovus Chairman and CEO, and Member of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. “We are grateful for our relationship with CSU and honored to be recognized with this renaming.” Synovus executives have individually provided valuable support to CSU, serving in leadership roles and providing the university with valuable guidance, wisdom, and involvement. Jimmy Yancey, a CSU alumnus who served as Synovus president and chairman of the board, chaired CSU's Investment in People campaign that ended in 2005 with more than $100 million raised and helped create CSU's RiverPark campus. James H. Blanchard, who served as chairman and CEO of Synovus for more than 35 years, created the annual Jim Blanchard Leadership Forum at CSU, which has become one of the most impressive gathering of leaders in the nation.

New Butler Center Report Identifies Employment Gaps in the Columbus Area

Officials in the Turner College's Butler Center for Research and Economic Development recently put the finishing touches on an extensive report on trends in educational programs and occupations in the Columbus area. The report also includes data on business and technology trends.  According to Fady Mansour , Director of the Butler Center, there are several key takeaways from the report regarding 10 occupational gaps that currently exist in the Columbus area. First,  software development occupation exhibits the biggest labor shortage, with the report adding that the TSYS School has a bachelor's degree program in information technology along with a new AI track for the bachelor's degree in computer science, both of which can qualify students for this occupation. TSYS School, Jianhua Yang, Lixin Wang Each among Top Five in the World

New research by computer scientists in the School of Information Technology at Universiti Utara Malaysia that ranks institutions and individuals on the basis of scholarship in the area of stepping-stone attacks heaps praise on the Turner College’s TSYS School of Computer Science and two of its faculty – Jianhua Yang and Lixin Wang .   The article, published in the April 2023 issue of the International Journal of Research in Engineering and Science , provides a bibliometric analysis of both publication and citation data from 2000 to September of 2022 related to research on stepping-stone intrusion.   Among several results, it reports that Columbus State University ranks second worldwide, trailing only the University of Houston, using total publications on the subject as the basis of comparison.   A number of other U.S. institutions appear in the top 10, including third-ranked North Carolina State University, fourth-ranked University of Illinois, sixth-ranked Iowa State U...
