Turner College computer science faculty member, Patrick Aiken , has been appointed to head the TSYS Center for Cybersecurity.  "We are extremely fortunate to have Patrick Aiken take on the role of Director of the TSYS Center for Cybersecurity,” stated Dean of the Turner College of Business, Deborah Kidder . “He brings with him a wealth of knowledge as well as a strong network in the Cyber and IT corporate community here in Columbus. He has already been instrumental in getting our Nexus program launched, and I look forward to working with him as we continue to develop our cybersecurity initiatives in Turner College." TSYS School of Computer Science faculty Lydia Ray and Rania Hodhod represented the Turner College as big winners at the 2022 CSU Awards Convocation.  Ray received the 2022 CSU Faculty Service Award for her service contributions within the campus, local community, and profession, all of which are evidence of a remarkable track record – not only as a scholar but also for her passion for service.  She has served CSU at all levels, from chairing important departmental committees, including program assessment and faculty search, to university-level responsibilities, such as chairing the Shared Governance Task Force and serving as the Executive Officer of the Faculty Senate.  Ray is active on advisory boards at Columbus Technical College and Southeast Missouri State University, and she assists her peers in understanding and implementing accessible technology solutions for students through collaborative efforts in computer-assisted learning.  According to Lydia, “The primar...

On April 28, 2022, Columbus State University’s D. Are Some Bluetooth Devices Actually Toothless? TSYS School professors Yesem Peker and Alfredo Perez teamed with their former student Gabriel Bello to investigate the security features available in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) standards, particularly as they relate to wearable devices, such the Fitbit hear rate wristband and the Polar heart rate chest wearable, and a BLE keyboard.   Their investigation of the standards for short-distance wireless communication that are implemented in these three popular devices is published in a 2022 issue of Sensors .   Their approach, which uses both the ComProbe Bluetooth Protocol Analyzer and the ComProbe software to capture the BLE traffic of these three devices, reveals that even though the standards provide security mechanisms, because the Bluetooth Special Interest Group does not require that manufacturers fully comply with the standards, some manufacturers fail to implement proper security mechanisms.   According to Peker, “thi...
