Now that Sheridan Construction is working on the side of the Synovus Center facing the Schuster Student Success Center, the company is using the lawn in front of the Schuster Center as a staging area. The movement of trucks and other equipment there has turned the lawn into a mess. That's expected for the type of construction work taking place on the exterior brick of the Synovus Center. It also represents an opportunity for something better to be done with this parcel of CSU's main campus once construction ends.
The photos accompanying this blog post show the long rectangular fountain pool at the front of the Lucas Administration Building at the entrance to the University of Southern Mississippi's main campus in Hattiesburg. Around the edge of the fountain are bricks that display the names of financial contributors to construction of the plaza surrounding the fountain. Concrete sidewalks enclose the bricked area, and as shown in the image at left there are benches available for those who wish to sit and enjoy the view. It is here that the Southern Miss marching band assembles for their march into M.M. Roberts Stadium on gameday Saturdays. Floats for the annual Homecoming parade are built in this area over the week of Homecoming. Some of these structures are shown in the aerial photo below, that includes a wider shot of the fountain.
What if instead of putting the Schuster lawn back to its former condition CSU started a donation campaign to place a fountain similar to that at USM in the space? Engraved bricks could be sold and donors could contribute separately (a dedication plaque could be installed nearby) to a project that would have an outsized effect, relative to its cost, on the view of campus from the University Avenue entrance. It kind of seems like a no brainer. What do you think?
