Turner Business Chats with Yoon Lee about Predicting Cryptocurrency Prices and Data Analytics

Turner College MIS professor Yoon Lee has experienced significant research success since 2022 and is now one of the organization's leaders in this regard. We recently visited with Lee to discuss his research endeavors. The transcript of that visit appears below.

TB: ‎Since 2022, you have published at least three papers appearing in A-rated journals. One of these is forthcoming in Information Systems Frontiers, which I saw just today via a Google Scholar notification as it now appears on the journal's webpage. This paper predicts Altcoin prices in cryptocurrency bear markets. How did you get involved in this line of research?

YL: One of my key research areas and interests is the application of AI/ML-based data analysis techniques to real-world business problems. Predicting stock or cryptocurrency prices is one of the most challenging tasks in finance and data analytics domains, and in particular, understanding the movement of cryptocurrency prices during a bear market is of great interest to investors. As we experience every day, stock and cryptocurrency prices are heavily influenced by investor sentiment. However, traditional statistical analysis methods are not well-suited for text-based sentiment analysis, whereas machine learning techniques provide this capability. Therefore, I decided to pursue research applying machine learning approaches to address this problem. I came to join this study to develop a prediction method by using machine learning skills.

TB: You are one of only six Turner College faculty to have published in an A-rated journal last year (2024). Your paper appears in the International Journal of Production Economics. What are your thoughts about reaching this level of productivity?

YL: I started my research projects driven by my interests and expertise rather than by publication goals in advance. This genuine motivation has enabled me to achieve the level of productivity I have today.

TB: With the portfolio you put together last year, did you earn one of the recent merit raises?

YL: No, I did not receive any type of merit raises, including the most recent one.

TB: What research topics are you currently pursuing?

YL: I am currently focusing on the class imbalance problem in the field of data analytics. In this line of research, we are investigating the effects of varying subset ratios when applying ensemble methods to the analysis of imbalanced datasets. In my business automation studies, I am working on automating business process planning and medical insurance claim generation by leveraging reinforcement learning and large language models (LLMs).
