Yesterday we reported some news about the halting of the construction on the Synovus Center. This post provides some of the details of the origins of that project. As the Board of Regents report below indicates, the Synovus Center project was listed under "Capital Outlay: Small Capital Projects" by the USG. The budget for the project was provided in the Fiscal Year 2024 state budget, when $8,200,000 was allocated by a House-Senate conference committee. Recall that work on the Synovus Center project began in late 2024/early 2025. Yesterday's Turner Business post reported that the $8,200,000 has been exhausted without any work on the front of the building being done.
The exhibit below shows the capital projects that were funded in the Fiscal Year 2026 state budget. The "Capital Outlay: Design, Construction, Equipment" category includes the forthcoming Space Science/Robotics Facility that is planned for the section of campus where the CSU Police Department currently resides. That project has thus far received $12,200,000 in funding. Based on the Synovus Center project schedule, work on the new Space Science/Robotics Facility might begin in late 2025 or early 2026. This schedule also suggests that the Synovus Center project will not be restarted until late 2026/early 2027 at the earliest, and that assumes additional funding for finishing the work gets into the Fiscal Year 2027 state budget. That budget will be developed over the five to seven months.
As the insert below indicates, the project is listed as "Project No. J-410" by the USG. There were five bids submitted, one of which was by Sheridan Construction, the Macon, GA-based company that was awarded the contract. Other bidders on the project included Freeman & Associates (Columbus, GA), Garbutt Construction (Dublin, GA), Parrish Construction (Perry, GA) and Piedmont Construction (Macon, GA). The deadline for sealed bids was set for August 30, 2023, at 2:00 pm.
