Many of the new first-year experience courses, known also as River Courses, are being offered by faculty from the Turner College and TSYS School. For example, TSYS School computer scientist Hyrum Carroll and Turner College associate professor of finance Joshua Brooks are teaming to offer Community Robotics Management. This course will focus on community engagement with local interdisciplinary robotics teams. In preparation to do so, students will learn soft skills (such as agile leadership, team management, presentations, time management, and conflict resolution) and how to program LEGO robots. These skills will be applied immediately as each student will serve as an assistant coach to a robotics team. Students will get to spend a significant amount of time helping a team and reflecting on their experiences to hone their team management skills. Another course, Insights in Business and Technology, is being taught by management professor John Finley and computer scientist Lixin Wang. This course introduces the foundations of key business and technology skills, including Excel, programming, and cybersecurity, while students work on real-world projects with local organizations. Associate professor of information systems, Yoon Lee, is offering a River course titled Mobile Apps: Cloud & No-Code. This course introduces mobile app development with no-code tools for beginners, covering Internet fundamentals and cloud computing. Students will work on a community project to design and develop an app and present their results in a final demo. Turner College economist Tesa Leonce and the TSYS School's Janice Canedo are teaming to offer Conquer Your Success Iceberg! This course will equip students with essential skills in business and technology while they explore topics like programming with Scratch and decision-making. Students will also engage in a hands-on project that fosters positive change in their lives and communities. Another Turner College economist, Fady Mansour, is teaming with the TSYS School's Yesem Peker to offer Building a Smarter, Safer Future, a course that explores essential financial literacy skills and cybersecurity strategies to grow one's finances and protect one's digital assets. Students will learn how to manage their finances wisely while safeguarding themselves against online threats.
