Obando, Cotten Nominated for 2025 Turner College Faculty Service Award

TSYS School associate professor of computer science Rodrigo Obando and Turner College professor of finance Brett Cotten are the nominees for the 2025 Turner College Excellence in Service Award. Obando currently serves on the CSU Faculty Affairs and GenEd Committees, along with the TSYS School's Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. He also serves as an Anchor Judge in the selection of Honor College students who are pursuing scholarships at CSU, particularly the Presidential Scholarship. Professor Obando has been an Assistant Marshall at every CSU graduation for the past 20 years, and recently he has taken on the role of photographer for events such as faculty recognition ceremonies, Discovery Days, college fairs and CIMFest. Lastly, among other activities he has served as the academic advisor for the CSU chapter of the Georgia Game Developers Association and a new student organization named ColorStack.
     Cotten currently serves on the CSU Sustainability Committee as well as the Turner College's Strategic Planning and Faculty Resource and Development Committees. As the Discipline Coordinator for finance, Cotten prepares student learning outcomes assessment reports and administers meetings to deal with issues associated with the finance discipline. As faculty advisor for the Turner College's Student Finance Association, he works with officers to secure speakers. In 2024, that process brought in speakers from Aflac, Charles Schwab, Equitable Securities and Synovus. In this position, Cotten also created an SIE Coordinator to encourage finance students to take the ‘Securities Industry Essentials’ Licensing Exam (the first part of the Series 7).  So far, one student has passed the exam, and two more are planning to take it later this semester.  Please join Turner Business in congratulating Professors Obando and Cotten on this outstanding achievement.

New Butler Center Report Identifies Employment Gaps in the Columbus Area

Officials in the Turner College's Butler Center for Research and Economic Development recently put the finishing touches on an extensive report on trends in educational programs and occupations in the Columbus area. The report also includes data on business and technology trends.  According to Fady Mansour , Director of the Butler Center, there are several key takeaways from the report regarding 10 occupational gaps that currently exist in the Columbus area. First,  software development occupation exhibits the biggest labor shortage, with the report adding that the TSYS School has a bachelor's degree program in information technology along with a new AI track for the bachelor's degree in computer science, both of which can qualify students for this occupation.
