It has been an eventful several months for Turner College alum Heidi Flanagan. While finishing her studies in the Turner College's MSOL program, in which Heidi is completed the human resources track, she had the opportunity to be among the few students to speak with representatives of AACSB during that organization's March 2024 visit to the Turner College for meetings related to re-accreditation. This month, while completing an internship with the Jefferson County Personnel Board in Birmingham, Alabama, Heidi worked with a team of interns to assess candidates for administrative supervisor and probation officer for Jefferson County. According to Heidi, "Graduate and doctoral students in industrial/organizational psychology were brought in from Houston to Connecticut and points between to get the job done."
These activities weren't enough to keep Heidi, shown second from left of front row in the photo below with other Turner College students who met with AACSB officials, completely busy as she recently became certified by the Society of Human Resource Management. "This international certification shows that I have attained the industry standard of human resources knowledge and skills. They include business acumen, communication, consultation, critical evaluation, HR technical skills, global and cultural effectiveness, leadership and navigation, relationship management, and ethical practice," Heidi explained. This certification is one of several that Heidi holds, including various appraisal certifications from the Georgia Department of Revenue and the California State Board of Equalization.
Heidi's professional career began as a journalist with the San Luis Obispo Tribune, and later with the Santa Maria Times, both in California. She then took on the role of Utility Communicator with the Diablo Canyon Power Plant in Avila Beach, California. Later, after working with The Parable Group and Pacific Gas & Electric, Heidi took on several roles with the County of San Luis Obispo. These prepared her for a move to the Columbus area in June of 2020 to work as a certified commercial real estate appraiser for the Columbus Consolidated Government. She would hold other roles with the CCG until 2023, when she entered the Turner College's MSOL program. Her educational preparation for that endeavor includes an A.S. degree in general studies from Cuesta College, and a B.S. in journalism from California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo. During her graduate studies in the Turner College, Heidi served as president of the Turner College chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management.
