2023-2024 Academic Year in Review: Part 4

The 2023-2024 academic year was an eventful one for the Turner College. Among the major highlights, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business visited the Turner College in March of 2024 for a five-year review, Turner College faculty dominated the CSU Faculty Awards ceremony in May of 2024, Fady Mansour was named Director of the Butler Center for Research and Economic Development, Tesa Leonce was named Associate Dean of the Turner College in July of 2023, and both the TSYS School and the Turner College hired new faculty. These and other items are summarized in this four-part series.
     March 2024 — The Turner College's Butler Center for Research and Economic Development co-hosted a panel discussion on the impact of Korean-U.S. economic relations on Georgia. The event, which was described as an evening of expert insights and forward-looking dialogue. Turner College management faculty Phil Bryant and Mark James teamed up to produce a special issue symposium on pay transparency for Compensation & Benefits Review, which Bryant edits on a permanent basis. The Turner College's student organizations hosted some impressive practitioners this month. The President and CEO of the Georgia Society of CPAs, Boyd Search, spoke to the Turner College's Accounting Club. The Turner College's Marketing Club hosted John Bunn, who owns Century 21 Bunn Real Estate, is a lifelong Harris County resident and has been a leading local real estate professional since 1986. On the curriculum front, Turner College Associate Dean Tesa Leonce announced the development of "a new and exciting course" titled New Venture Finance. The instructor assigned to teach the course, which will first be offered in fall of 2024, is Brett Cotten, a professor of finance in the Turner College. In the area of research, Fady Mansour, Director of the Butler Center for Research and Economic Development, had a paper accepted for publication by Research in EconomicsTurner College management professor Kevin Hurt and U.S. Army Major Ross Nolan, a graduate of the Turner College's master's degree program in organizational leadership, had their study published by American Business Review. Relatedly, Servant Leadership: Theory and Practice, the Turner College's academic journal (which is edited by Hurt), released its latest issue during March. Lastly, Turner College economist Frank Mixon had studies accepted for publication by the Journal of Institutional Economics and Real Estate.
     April 2024 — As it does every year, April marked the beginning of award season at CSU. Turner College faculty dominated at the CSU Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony. TSYS School computer scientist Yesem Kurt-Peker won the 2024 CSU Chappell Graduate Faculty Award, TSYS School Director Rania Hodhod won the 2024 CSU Teaching Innovation Award, and Turner College associate professor of finance Joshua Brooks won the 2024 CSU Online Teaching Award. The Turner College also confers awards each year.  This year management professor Johnny Ho won the Excellence in Research Award, computer science associate professor Linqiang Ge won the Excellence in Online Teaching Award, management associate professor Mark James won the Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award, computer science professor Jianhua Yang won the Excellence in Service Award, Turner College Academic Affairs Coordinator Jennifer Stone won the Olice Embry Award, and finance associate professor Joshua Brooks won the Excellence in Teaching Award. Turner College students also took home awards from the 2024 CSU Scholastic Honors Convocation. Lauren Katzfey won the Student of Excellence in Marketing & Management Award, Jose Perez-Garcia won the Accounting Student Award, Daniel Shafer won the Computer Science Student of Excellence Award and Lizzy Grant won the Marketing Student Award. Turner College students Tyler Brown, Bryan Lucas, Makynleigh Roberson, Chrystal Phillips and Rodrick Fowler were big winners at the 2024 Student Leadership & Organization Awards Ceremony. Five Turner College students were inducted into Phi Kappa Phi. This group includes Michael Pressly, Jennifer Stone, Elizabeth Chess, Latoria Akins-Jackson and Cory WilliamsTSYS School student Frank Oppong Boateng received the Kiongozi Award for Outstanding International Leadership—bestowed by the Center for Global Engagement on a graduating international student who has demonstrated campus involvement and academic leadership. Lastly, Lauryn Roberson and Lizzy Grant both had the honor of accepting the CSU Tower Traditions Medal. In other news, management faculty Phil Bryant and John Finley, along with finance's Gisung Moon, were promoted to full professor, 12 TSYS School students were selected for internships with Global Cybernetics, Turner College alum Jenny Heins joined the cast of the Amazon Prime series The Blox, TSYS School Director Rania Hodhod became the first-ever woman to speak at Columbus' Candun Club, and the TSYS School announced that Rahmatullah Roche , a graduate student at Virginia Tech, will be joining its faculty as an assistant professor in August of 2024. Finally, in the area of academic research Turner College economist Frank Mixon, whose academic research surpassed 5,000 Google Scholar citations in April, had a paper accepted for publication in Public Choice, and TSYS School computer scientist Yi Zhou had a study accepted for publication in Future Internet.
     May 2024 — May marked a continuation of hiring new faculty when Tuan Ngo of Penn State accepted an offer to join the Turner College's management faculty as an assistant professor beginning in August of 2024. Another proud moment for the Turner College occurred this month as each of CSU's spring 2024 commencement ceremonies featured Jake Harris as the university’s commencement speaker. Jake earned a BBA in marketing from the Turner College in 2021 and is nearing the end of consumer banking and commercial credit training at Synovus. Earlier in the month Anne Kohnke, an associate professor of cybersecurity and Director of the Center for Cybersecurity and Intelligence Services at the University of Detroit Mercy, visited the TSYS Center for Cybersecurity. On the research front, Turner College economist Frank Mixon had a paper accepted for publication by The American Journal of Economics & Sociology.

CSU Head Women's Soccer Coach Jay Entlich recently released a list of CSU faculty who have been chosen by a player as a member of the CSU faculty who has impacted the player in a positive way along their journey at CSU. Management professor Phil Bryant was named by Sophia Leal , a freshman midfielder from Oxford, Georgia. Sophia attended Eastside High School and was a two-time all-region selection during her high school career. Through the first 10 games of 2024, she has scored one goal and recorded three assists.         Next, management professor John Finley was named by Lizz Forshaw , a graduate student forward from Stockton, England. Turner College Grad Publishes Academic Study on Corporate Culture and Strategy

Former Turner College student Tamara Todorova , now an associate professor of economics at American University in Bulgaria (AUB), recently published a study on corporate culture and strategy. Todorova earned an MBA from the Turner College in 1996 and then went on to earn a doctorate in international economics from the University of Economics - Varna in 2001. She has been on the faculty at AUB since August of 2000. Todorova's study, which appears in the current issue of the International Journal of Business Performance Management , investigates how corporate culture helps to economize on the transaction costs of internal organization. As she explains, the dimensions of corporate culture that assist in this task include increasing trust and reducing intrafirm opportunism. Todorova's study demonstrates that setting common goals and a common direction reduces the sizeable costs of internal organization. Hammer joins Turner College Finance Faculty

The Turner College's Department of Accounting and Finance welcomes Melissa Ingle Hammer , who joins the group as an adjunct faculty in finance.  Hammer graduated from the Turner College in 2005, after earning a BBA in finance. She later went on to earn an MBA from Auburn University, a Specialist Certificate in Conduct Risk from the University of Manchester, a Certificate in Team Culture from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Certificate in Executive Presence from Cornell University. Hammer is the SVP of Fair Lending Product Management with RiskExec at Asurity. She previously worked as Compliance Manager of Fair Lending at Synovus, a senior regulatory consultant with Wolters Kluwer, and as VP of Compliance at TD. This semester Hammer will be teaching FINC 3135, Financial Institutions and Technologies. Turner Business  welcomes Melissa and wishes her a great first semester in the Turner College.
