Turner College associate professor of finance Joshua Brooks received the 2024 Turner College Excellence in Teaching Award at the organization's 2024 faculty and staff retreat on April 30. He previously won the 2022 Turner College Online Teaching Award and was nominated for the 2023 CSU Teaching Innovation Award. Brooks' performance in the classroom has always been exemplary, as evidenced by student evaluations of teaching. Being in the CSU environment has only added motivation to continue classroom excellence. "Columbus State University’s attitude towards effective pedagogy struck me from my very first day on campus. The wide array of professional development and the dedication to instruction were evident from instructors, to department chairs, to administration," Brooks explained. When coronavirus caught the world by surprise it dramatically accelerated many of the slowly moving forces of education innovation. When lockdown went into effect, Brooks taught himself video editing software and created a YouTube channel to begin posting short problem solving videos for each of his classes. He continues to build on this and has found it to be invaluable for teaching Business Analytics and Managerial Finance. I also began communicating each week with students through announcements and email. Speaking of his students, Brooks credits them for much of his classroom success. "I have been fortunate to have had a number of incredibly bright and highly motivated students who have shown a passion for excellence in their fields. They are a great source of encouragement to me, and their stories humble and motivate me to continue to develop and implement relevant online material. At the end of each semester, I take some time to write down a list of opportunities for improvement to incorporate in the next semester’s preparations. At times, I have also adjusted my online presence mid semester. Students are our primary customers. They are the reason we exist. They are the future of not just our organization but all organizations." Turner Business congratulates Joshua on this outstanding achievement.
