Stuart Rayfield Named Sole Finalist for CSU Presidency

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) voted on March 1, 2023, to name Stuart Rayfield as the sole finalist for the Columbus State University presidency.  Rayfield, who spent more than 10 years at CSU as a faculty member and administrator, most recently served as the USG’s interim executive vice chancellor for academic affairs and has been interim president of three USG institutions during a 17-year career with the university system.  John M. Fuchko III, a USG vice chancellor, took on the role interim president of CSU after former President Chris Markwood retired on June 30, 2022.  “Stuart is an outstanding leader who’s passionate about the success of students, faculty and staff,” USG Chancellor Sonny Perdue said.  “I want to thank Columbus State’s presidential search committee for their work in finding strong candidates to lead the university and know the Board of Regents were impressed by Dr. Rayfield’s vision and experience both in higher education and within the system.”  Rayfield currently serves as USG’s vice chancellor for leadership and institutional development.  In late 2019, she was named interim president at the University of West Georgia and previously served as interim president of Gordon State College and the former Bainbridge State College.  Prior to those roles, Rayfield served as the Frank D. Brown Distinguished Chair in Servant Leadership, associate professor and interim associate provost for undergraduate education at CSU.  It was in the first of these roles that Rayfield was loosely affiliated with the Turner College, as she served on the faculty that delivered course instruction in the servant leadership track of the Turner College’s master’s degree program in organizational leadership.

“Columbus State’s next president needs to positively engage both the campus and the greater community to help increase student success and elevate Columbus State’s role in the region and in Georgia,” said Regent C. Thomas Hopkins, Jr., M.D., who chaired the university’s Presidential Search Committee. “I’m grateful to our committee members for their hard work and commitment in helping find a leader who can energize the university and make Columbus proud.”  Prior to her service in the USG, Rayfield held positions at Auburn University, Vanderbilt University, Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Alabama.  “I’m thrilled to be considered for the presidency of Columbus State and look forward to working with students, faculty and staff to celebrate the university’s successes and its potential for the future,” Rayfield said. “Columbus State offers nationally recognized programs in everything from the arts to teaching and nursing, and I know that together we can build on those efforts to make it a destination in Georgia and beyond.”  Rayfield earned a doctorate in higher education administration focused on leadership, policy and organizations from Vanderbilt University, a master’s in higher education administration focused on student affairs from the University of Alabama and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Rhodes College. 

The Board will take action on the position at a future board meeting no sooner than five days from naming a finalist.

Seven Turner College Management and Marketing Faculty Have Combined to Produce Eight A-Level Journal Publications Between 2021 and the Present

A number of faculty in the Turner College's Department of Management and Marketing, which includes faculty in management information systems, have produced A-level journal publications in the last few years. This report covers that activity, starting with John Finley , the chairperson of the department. Professor Finley published a paper in the Journal of Computer Information Systems in 2022.      Finley is joined by Kirk Heriot , the Crowley Distinguished Chair in Entrepreneurship. Heriot, who earned a PhD in management from Clemson University, published in a 2021 issue of Small Business Economics . One of the study's co-authors, Andres Jauregui of Fresno State University, was previously a member of the Turner College's economics faculty.      Next is Johnny Ho , a professor of management, who has a 2022 publication in the Journal of Computer Information Systems . TSYS School, Jianhua Yang, Lixin Wang Each among Top Five in the World

New research by computer scientists in the School of Information Technology at Universiti Utara Malaysia that ranks institutions and individuals on the basis of scholarship in the area of stepping-stone attacks heaps praise on the Turner College’s TSYS School of Computer Science and two of its faculty – Jianhua Yang and Lixin Wang .   The article, published in the April 2023 issue of the International Journal of Research in Engineering and Science , provides a bibliometric analysis of both publication and citation data from 2000 to September of 2022 related to research on stepping-stone intrusion.   Among several results, it reports that Columbus State University ranks second worldwide, trailing only the University of Houston, using total publications on the subject as the basis of comparison.   A number of other U.S. institutions appear in the top 10, including third-ranked North Carolina State University, fourth-ranked University of Illinois, sixth-ranked Iowa State U...
