Columbus State University’s Faculty Senate begins the 2026-27 academic year with Judith Livingston serving as its executive officer, and Katherine Cannon, GCPCA continues to chair the Staff Council for a second consecutive year. Livingston will serve as the Faculty Senate’s executive officer. The Faculty Senate provides a representative voice in university operations for more than 550 full- and part-time faculty and functions through a structure of elected officers and college senators. A professor in the Department of English, Livingston has served on the Columbus State faculty since 2011 after teaching roles at Louisiana State University, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, and Tulane University. A new study by Butler Center Director Fady Mansour ,  Stefani Milovanska-Farrington of Florida Polytechnic University,  Nour Kattih of Middle Tennessee State University  and  Mohammed Saeed of King Abdulaziz University investigates whether the mandatory submission of answers to practice questions improves students’ performance on the practice quizzes and subsequent economics exams. As the study explains, it is well-known that practice helps students learn because taking a quiz or exam requires recalling information – a phenomenon referred to the academic l iterature as the “testing effect.” To explore this effect, Mansour and his co-authors  collected data from five sections (three face-to-face and two online) of an introductory macroeconomics course at a four-year public university located in the southern United States. Almost one year ago Turner Business reported on research that was conducted by Turner College economist Frank Mixon , along with colleagues Ján Buleca and Maryna Tatar of the Technical University of Košice, and Ermanno Affuso of the University of South Alabama, evaluating the effects of external shocks, primarily domestic armed conflicts, on the market equilibrium in residential energy and assesses their impact on consumer welfare. Since that time the study has undergone substantial revisions and is forthcoming in a future issue of Peace Economics, Peace Science and Public Policy . Their revised study utilizes a  global, rather than local, exposure measure representing annual variation in realized armed conflict activity worldwide. In this blog entry Turner Business is re-visiting the data compiled to examine average class sizes in undergraduate courses belonging to the five business majors in the Turner College. This time we are looking at course enrollments with ACCT, FINC, MGMT, MISM and MKTG prefixes, with special attention to face-to-face enrollments vs. online enrollments. The data are shown in the table below. As shown in the table above, of the 359 students enrolled in accounting's 12 Fall 2026 course sections, 192 of these will be in class while 167 will be online. The breakdown here is 53.5% in class and 46.5% online. Finance courses lean even more toward in class, with 147 of its 221 students, or 66.5%, attending class and only 74 of its 221 students, or 33.5%, enrolled online. Heading into the fall semester Turner Business decided to examine the average class sizes of the business courses offered by the Turner College in subjects where students can earn a degree, either undergraduate or graduate. At the undergraduate level this list would include accounting (ACCT), finance (FINC), management (MGMT), management information systems (MISM) and marketing (MKTG). At the graduate level there is the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL), the latter of which also includes courses in human resources (MSHR) and servant leadership (MSSL). The data are shown in the table below. As shown in the table above, the average class size in management, 33.8 students, exceeds that in every other undergraduate major. Its closest rival is marketing, with an average class size of 31.0 students, followed by accounting, with an average class size of 29.9 students. During the Turner College's welcome back gathering on August 4, 2026, Student Success Manager Talisha Lockhart  unveiled a new pilot program, Peer Academic Leaders (PALs), designed to elevate the academic performance of business and computer science students. According to the plan, the Turner College's undergraduate student tutors will be replaced with graduate students holding undergraduate degrees in business or computer science who will devote time to working with groups of students on team projects, sometimes during class sessions, that are required in the courses of study. Although some hours will remain dedicated to one-to-one tutoring, Lockhart noted that this "more student-focused approach" is geared to the kind of academic assistance that today's students require. Columbus State University has appointed Bryan Banks as the Dean of Libraries & Archives. A member of the university’s faculty since 2018, he has served as Interim Dean of Libraries & Graduate School since 2024.  In his new role, Banks will lead the CSU library network’s strategic vision, academic planning and operations. This network features the Simon Schwob Memorial Library on Main Campus, as well as specialized art and music libraries at the RiverPark Campus. With nearly 300,000 items in its collections, the libraries provide informational access to all programs on campus. Additionally, it includes the Archives & Special Collections, charged with preserving university and regional history, along with maintaining more than 500 distinct collections that include the renowned J.
