Two Turner College Student-Athletes Inducted into 2025 Class of Girls in the Game

The CSU Department of Athletics will mark a decade of its female student-athletes’ success during its 10th-anniversary Girls in the Game Luncheon on Thursday, September 25. The annual program, which begins at 11:30 a.m. in the University’s Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center, recognizes a female student-athlete from each of CSU’s eight NCAA Division II women’s sports teams. All honorees receive a one-year academic scholarship and a specially designed Girls in the Game medallion. Among those in this year's class is Annie Adams, a graduate student from Columbus who is pursuing a master’s degree in business. Adams is a member of CSU's women's tennis team. Joining Adams is Samantha Dewendt Morales, a sophomore from Dawsonville who is majoring in business. Morales is a member of the CSU women's golf team. “Girls In the Game is just one way we honor our Columbus State University student-athletes for their dedication to their sport and for being scholars in the classroom,” said Athletics Director Justin Hay. “This year’s class of well-deserving female student-athletes continues a legacy of being champions in athletics, academics and life.” 
Hughston Clinic is the presenting luncheon sponsor, and three-time Olympic medalist DeeDee Trotter will be the featured speaker. Trotter, a dynamic presence in track and field, secured gold medals in the 4×400-meter relay at both the 2004 Athens and 2012 London Olympics and earned bronze in the individual 400-meter event in 2012. Her path exemplifies resilience and determination, serving as an inspiration to many overcoming challenges. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to athletics, Trotter was inducted into the University of Tennessee Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023. Following the luncheon, Trotter will host a “Train with an Olympian” track and field agility clinic at the university’s Walden Soccer Complex. The clinic is presented by local partners Chick-fil-A, Columbus Coca-Cola, and MWV Screen Printing. A limited number of luncheon tickets and clinic spaces may be purchased online. Individuals, businesses and organizations may also designate donations to the Girls in the Game scholarship endowment.

New Butler Center Report Identifies Employment Gaps in the Columbus Area

Officials in the Turner College's Butler Center for Research and Economic Development recently put the finishing touches on an extensive report on trends in educational programs and occupations in the Columbus area. The report also includes data on business and technology trends.  According to Fady Mansour , Director of the Butler Center, there are several key takeaways from the report regarding 10 occupational gaps that currently exist in the Columbus area. First,  software development occupation exhibits the biggest labor shortage, with the report adding that the TSYS School has a bachelor's degree program in information technology along with a new AI track for the bachelor's degree in computer science, both of which can qualify students for this occupation. TSYS School, Jianhua Yang, Lixin Wang Each among Top Five in the World

New research by computer scientists in the School of Information Technology at Universiti Utara Malaysia that ranks institutions and individuals on the basis of scholarship in the area of stepping-stone attacks heaps praise on the Turner College’s TSYS School of Computer Science and two of its faculty – Jianhua Yang and Lixin Wang .   The article, published in the April 2023 issue of the International Journal of Research in Engineering and Science , provides a bibliometric analysis of both publication and citation data from 2000 to September of 2022 related to research on stepping-stone intrusion.   Among several results, it reports that Columbus State University ranks second worldwide, trailing only the University of Houston, using total publications on the subject as the basis of comparison.   A number of other U.S. institutions appear in the top 10, including third-ranked North Carolina State University, fourth-ranked University of Illinois, sixth-ranked Iowa State U...
